Wanna Know Me?

My name is Aimee Bobruk. I am an American songwriter and performer with one foot in Austin, Texas and the other in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Something comes from something else…

I was born on the outskirts of Huntsville, Texas at the end of a caliche dirt road named after my grandfather. I spent 15 years in Austin, TX learning to write songs and perform until the day songs and love took me to the edge of the Baltic Sea where I now reside in Denmark.

My life’s path is unconventional as is my approach to writing music. And I would much rather create music than talk about it.

Sweet Malybanchia...

“Malybanchia” is a lost word of native american origin.
The first time I read the word it conjured two images - an exotic mystical land or a horrible disease. The more I carried the word with me, the more it became a state of mind, almost a part of myself, a life theme I would write songs around.

My new album, Malybanchia, is due for release May of 2024.

This collection of songs is inspired by a roadtrip along the Mississippi river and a residency at the childhood home of America’s southern gothic author, Carson McCullers. The songs are my attempt to internalize the river and reflect on themes McCullers presents in her works.

Like with /ba.’brook/, I found myself once again in the Wonder Chamber in the company of fellow musicians and collaborators, Brian Beattie and Dony Wynn. Producer/bassist Brian Beattie and drummer Dony Wynn are two musicians whose perspectives to music-making are refreshingly untraditional, to put it simply.

Beattie hails from Austin's avant-garde punk rock band Glass Eye and has produced albums for Daniel Johnston, Okkervil River, Bill Callahan and Shearwater.  Wynn, who I refer to as ’The Santa Claus of Percussion’, has worked with such artists as Robert Plant and Robert Palmer and is known for building his drum kits out of everything from a banana peel to a filing cabinet.

Follow the lines…
The line on a map is a clear demarcation. The Mississippi river is the cultural vein of the United States.
I followed the river from the Gulf of Mexico to St. Louis. Along the way, I spent three months in Columbus, Georgia reading lines on pages written by Carson McCullers.

Be it physical or literary, I follow the lines and see where they take me in song.

If you look up the word Malybanchia you won’t find much. Just a footnote in history. The word is of a different time and of a lost language. Resurrecting the name for this album seemed fitting.

On my journey through the south I’ve felt the juxtaposition of being a modern 21st century woman, surrounded by the heat and ghosts of the past.

The music is my sense. This is my south. Sweet Malybanchia.
